Glossary
Plain definitions of the terms used across Single Origin.
Access token
A personal token you create under Account → Access Tokens. MCP clients send it as Bearer <token_id>:<token_secret>; you can have up to 2 active tokens.
Active
A recommendation nobody has picked up yet. It shows on the Open tab.
Applied
A person confirmed the recommendation shipped as proposed. Its saving is measured from the ship date.
Applied (Unconfirmed)
Single Origin saw the change the recommendation asked for and the cost fell. It waits on Did this work? until a person says whether the change was this recommendation's.
Applied (Variant)
A person shipped a different change that serves the same end. It counts as applied.
Archived
A recommendation that stayed Stale for another month. Single Origin sets it; it is left out of lists unless asked for by name.
Context graph
Single Origin's model of your warehouse, built from query history and metadata: jobs, queries, tables, costs and changes, linked together.
DAG and task
An Airflow DAG and one task in it. Single Origin names a job by both, as "
Did this work?
The Recommendations tab where you confirm which recommendations shipped and what they saved. Confirmed savings move to Optimized in prod.
Estimated daily savings
What Single Origin expects a recommendation to save per day if applied. The measured saving comes later, on Did this work?.
Full-history rebuild
A write that rebuilds its whole output on every run from a scan that reads most of a table's history. Single Origin reports it as the full_history_rewrite signal.
Ignored
A person set the recommendation aside, ideally with a reason. Single Origin carries the reason into the next analysis of the same workload.
In Review
Someone is looking at the recommendation. Moving it here assigns you when nobody is assigned.
Invalidated
A person found the recommendation does not apply. A reason is required, and Single Origin analyses the workload afresh.
Job
An orchestrator job, such as an Airflow task, that runs queries in your warehouse. Queries with no job tag are grouped by query shape instead.
Job tag
The tag on a query that names the job that ran it. In MCP results, job_tag is the job id plus the statement's first SQL word, such as "nightly_revenue &&& load_orders &&& INSERT".
MCP
The Model Context Protocol, an open standard that lets AI agents call tools. Single Origin's MCP server gives your agent its tools over streamable HTTP.
Open savings
The total estimated daily savings of the recommendations on the Open tab. The web app also shows it as about a month if all are applied.
Optimized in prod
The Recommendations tab that lists recommendations with a confirmed saving: ship date, cost before and after, and saving a day.
Partially Applied
A person shipped part of the recommendation. It counts as applied, and the saving shows as partial.
Pruning
How many of a table's partitions a query skips thanks to its filter. In scan cost results, avg_pruning_fraction runs from 0 to 1; higher means more partitions skipped.
Query
One execution of a SQL statement in your warehouse, with its own query id, cost and profile.
Query shape (query pattern)
Queries with the same structure: the same tables, joins, filters and aggregates. Single Origin groups untagged queries, and finds similar queries, by shape.
Query signature
The key Single Origin groups queries by: "<dag_id> &&& <task_id>" for a tagged job, optionally followed by ||
Recommendation
A fix Single Origin proposes: the problem, the change to make, the jobs or table it touches, and its estimated daily savings.
Scanned per read
The share of a table a query reads, averaged over the queries that read it. A high value on a large table means its filters prune little.
Stale
A recommendation nobody moved for a month. Single Origin sets it; it is hidden from the default list but recoverable.
Stop cause
Why an applied recommendation's covered jobs stopped running: the fix removed them, their queries moved to another job, or another reason. It decides how the saving is counted.
Untagged query
A query with no job tag, such as an ad hoc, BI or connector query. Untagged queries are grouped by query shape under a signature.
